On Movies

What is the value of a movie?

Clay Christiansen, author of The Innovator’s Dilemma, and an underrated book titled How Will You Measure Your Life? posed an interesting question about products:

What is your product's “job to be done”?

He suggests that everything we buy, we essentially hire for a job, whether that’s a milkshake or a car.

Why do people pay for art? Specifically, why do they pay for movies?

Why do you?

Some of my reasons (for better or for worse) have been:

To escape from reality.

To know what the fuss (good or bad) is about.

To find something to do with my kids.

To spend time with my wife.

To feel cultured.

To feel inspired.

To feel anything…

When you ask yourself honestly, why have you hired movies recently? Why not?
